Spending the extra money irritated me, but I reminded myself that I was doing it for my son.
I wanted his wedding day to be peaceful.
Then I arrived at the venue.
And the moment I stepped inside, I stopped.
Vanessa’s mother was wearing blue.
Not a subtle shade either.
She stood near the entrance greeting relatives in a beautiful blue gown as if there were absolutely nothing unusual about her choice.
For a few seconds, I honestly wondered whether I had misunderstood Vanessa’s request.
I had spent money on another dress specifically because she told me blue would be inappropriate.
Yet her own mother was standing there wearing exactly that color.
Then I looked around.
Two of Vanessa’s aunts were wearing blue too.
They even had coordinated corsages.
This clearly wasn’t an accident.
Someone had planned it.
I tried telling myself there must be a reasonable explanation.
Unfortunately, there was.
And the explanation made me feel even worse.
Before the ceremony, I found Vanessa surrounded by relatives and friends.
I waited until I could speak to her quietly.
“You told me blue wasn’t supposed to be worn.”
She shifted slightly.
“That’s not exactly what I said.”
I stared at her.
“Then why did you specifically ask me not to wear it?”
Before Vanessa could answer, her mother stepped closer.
“Blue is for family.”
For a moment, I couldn’t think of anything to say.
Then I looked directly at her.
“I’m the groom’s mother.”
She gave me a small, tight smile.
Not embarrassed.
Not apologetic.
Just a smile that made it clear she understood exactly what she had said.
I turned toward Grant.
“Grant?”
