“It was supposed to be a surprise.”
I blinked.
“What was?”
“The wall.”
“The missing wall was supposed to be a surprise?”
“No.”
She rolled her eyes.
“The thing Dad was going to put in it.”
I sat beside her.
“What thing?”
She hesitated.
“A bookshelf.”
“A bookshelf?”
“And a reading seat.”
I said nothing.
Maddie started explaining quickly.
“For your birthday.”
My birthday was only a week away.
“Dad wanted to make one of those built-in reading areas.”
She pulled out her phone.
“I helped him pick it out.”
She opened a saved photo.
It showed a beautiful recessed reading nook built into a wall.
Shelves on both sides.
